The smallest work of art on a diamond.

A Dutch artist has just engraved the world's smallest piece of art on a 2.75-carat diamond.

Pablo Lücker in collaboration with Trophy by Gassan has presented a limited series of diamonds. Each of them is engraved with his art.

Amsterdam-based jeweler Trophy by Gassan has provided Dutch artist Pablo Lücker with 13 patented and laser-enhanced GASSAN 121 diamonds. He used these as canvases for what may be the smallest artworks in the world.

The limited series of laser-engraved diamonds, known as the HE(ART) Diamond Collection, was unveiled at a trade show in Amsterdam last month. Each features a different heart designed by Lücker. He engraved it on a 2.75-carat crown diamond and 12 1-carat diamonds.

The largest diamond is still available for a staggering $134,000. While the cost for the smaller diamonds, which are almost impossible to find, is around $31,000 each. Each of the HRD-certified stones comes with a certificate of craftsmanship.

The reference to carats is to the weight of a diamond, not its size. But the face of an average one-carat diamond is usually just a quarter of an inch in size. Lücker calculated their tiny size by developing a series of unique hearts, since the shape itself is so universally recognizable. The variations of the designs reflect the infinite varieties and complexity of love.

“A heart has reference to the love of travel. Also maintaining the connection when no one is together,” said the artist. Another, acknowledging self-esteem, shows a hand on the heart. So this represents staying true to yourself and doing things with passion.”.

Former footballer turned Gasan executive Calvin Jong-a-Pin recruited Lücker for the company's first artistic collaboration. Lücker also said Damien Hirst's stunningly expensive For the Love of God (2007), a platinum cast skull with 8,601 diamonds, inspired him to get involved. Gassan and Lücker planned the creation of the HE(ART) diamond collection over the course of eight months.

Lücker's efforts have generated a lot of interest. So a couple replaced the diamonds in his wedding rings with his work. “Also someone else wanted to use my diamond for an engagement ring, which I think is a great compliment,” Lücker added. “They know the secret - that there's something in it.”.

The collection will be lost once it is out of print, but Lücker hints at future collaborations with Gassan. “There will be something amazing coming soon,” he said.
