A personal archive, a secret history, a quiet ritual of remembrance and self-expression. This is how Ophelia Eve describes the «Scroll» clasp pendant.
The pendant was designed to be a deeply emotional piece. As it holds and protects a washi paper scroll with a personal message, mantra, or love letter to yourself, written in calligraphy.
Co-founders Samantha and Beth Yorn looked to jewelry with sentimental value throughout history. To create this piece of 18-karat solid gold with accent diamonds.
«We were always drawn to the symbolic practices and meanings incorporated into Victorian jewelry. Not just for their decoration, but for their intimacy. Many of these pieces were designed to carry something within them. A message, a name, even a lock of hair. Something that has a silent significance for their owner,» Samantha said.
The shape comes from the form of the buckle, which gives it a modern feel. While the papyrus is a nod to the past.
«It also reflects something I often think about. That is, that jewelry is a means of transporting time. They don't just mark a moment, but they carry it forward and allow it to evolve with you. What you write can have a specific meaning when you first place it inside. And become completely different years later,» he added.
The pendant with the clasp has an articulated construction. Where the ends with the inverted diamond decoration and the polished gold tubes unscrew from the center. This allows the jewelry to be worn in various ways.
The custom roller is inside the pipes.
The roll is made of traditional Japanese washi paper. Due to its soft texture and durable plant fibers, the company explained.
Samantha chose a short phrase from Joni Mitchell's lyrics for her personal Scroll pendant.
«It transports me back to such a joyful moment and wearing it feels like a sweet secret I have with myself. I wanted to choose something that embodies a feeling I always want to keep close to me,» she said.
«I also like the idea of finally making one with a small handwritten note from my partner or my best friend — something even more personal, completely unique.»
She also likes it when people prefer short, more mysterious phrases for their secret messages written on papyrus.
The Scroll toggle pendant is sold for $11,720, or $15,720 for the pendant on a large 18-inch chain.
It is available on Ophelia Eve's website.
The brand will also exhibit at Couture in Las Vegas next month, and you can find them at the Design Atelier in booth DA26.
