An ode to antique pearls.

There is something about pearls that gives them a timeless charm.

It was Coco Chanel who famously claimed that “a woman needs many rows of pearls”. Later Jackie Kennedy, among many others, agreed that “pearls are always appropriate”. So what exactly has made them unanimously loved from one generation to the next?;

It could be that it is the only gemstone formed inside a living creature. Unlike diamonds and other stones, they are presented as they are meaning no cutting or polishing is required. This fact also results in a range of iridescent hues. Because of this, they can also be quite large in size, creating luxurious and striking jewellery.

Or maybe that's what they symbolize. Pearls have long been believed to represent purity and tranquility as well as wisdom, protection and good fortune. That, in part, is why they are such a popular wedding choice, whether you realize it or not.

Whatever the reason, as proof of their inimitable beauty and longevity, we present below some pieces of antique pearl jewellery that have lived far longer lives than any of us. Chanel and Kennedy would definitely approve.
