Met Gala 2023, monochrome magic.

Black, white and bright sparks of red were the dominant theme of this year's Met Gala. There, celebrities from all over honored the memory of Karl Lagerfeld, the late artistic director of Chanel, through the lens of high fashion.

Exquisite jewellery was present in the form of pearls, pearls and pearls again. Paired with diamond chokers, pendant earrings, matching cuffs and cocktail rings. Let's take a look at some of the best jewelry at the Met Gala 2023. The event was hosted by Vogue and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

The theme of the Met Gala 2023 was “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty”.

This seems to have allowed the celebrities in attendance to choose one of the four options. A tribute to Chanel, a celebration of Parisian chic, a kitsch version of Karl Lagerfeld's passions or something dazzling and brightly coloured!

This year's Met Gala was overflowing with monochromatic black and white ensembles. With rows of Coco Chanel's iconic pearls and gamine Parisian fringe. Also layered rows of diamonds hidden behind collars and nestled in lace.

Precious pearls

Let's start with pearls... lots of pearls! Reality star Kim Kardashian has taken aesthetics to its limits.

She wrapped herself in more than 50,000 freshwater pearls as part of a Schiaparelli set. She added a choker, pearl earrings and a ring to complete her look. They say it took about 1,000 hours of tying and draping to fit her body perfectly.

Tennis star Serena Williams also chose multiple rows of pearls, this time from Tiffany & Co. Even Karlie Kloss accentuated her silhouette with pearls from Garrard & Co.

Pearls were also used in more subtle ways. Florence Pugh wore two pairs of pearl and diamond earrings from Tiffany & Co. Jazz and Victoria and a pearl and platinum diamond tennis bracelet, also from the brand.

Salma Hayek looked luminous in deep red leather and lace with pearl detailing on the shoulder and a pair of Lorraine Schwartz earrings. Model Ashley Graham looked stunning in a baby pink and black velvet corset. She accessorized with asymmetrical Mikimoto pearl earrings. Brooklyn Decker even impressed in Sean Gilson's Bubble Pearl tiara for Assael, paired with long chains of Assael Akoya and Tahitian pearls.

Delectable Diamonds

One of the best ways to maintain an elegant monochromatic ensemble is to choose diamond ornaments. The Met Gala 2023 red carpet was overflowing with transparent stones, some subtle and others outrageously oversized.

The point of reference is singer Dua Lipa. She wore a 200-carat Tiffany & Co. necklace with 200 carats of diamonds, including a huge pendant with radiant-cut diamonds. The piece was in perfect harmony with the neckline of her archival Chanel dress. Her other jewelry, including a nine-carat ring with three oval-cut diamonds, was also from Tiffany & Co.

Diamonds were also worn extensively in Choker form. This made them one of the jewellery trends that stood out throughout the Met Gala.

Lily James chose De Beers jewellery and Irina Shayk wore Ana Khouri. Rihanna created her own version of “neck chaos” with Bulgari jewellery. With five pear-shaped diamonds, 118 cultured Akoya pearls, seven pear-shaped diamonds, 109 round diamonds and another 561 cut diamonds. Let's not forget some other chokers of the night. Like Lea Michele with Jacob & Co, Fred Leighton and Kwiat. Also Kerry Washington with Mikimoto and Miranda Kerr with Dior.

If it was not a choker, then diamond necklaces, necklaces, rivières or lariats were the usual. Many were elegant on the neckline.

Like the new Cartier Le Voyage Recommencé High Jewellery necklace worn by Lily Collins in platinum, onyx and diamonds. This is a good taste of what's to come from the brand later this year! Michelle Yeoh also wore Cartier in a similar style, but with a diamond drop of significant size.

Earrings took a back seat at this year's Met Gala, but there were still some stunning examples.

Emily Blunt looked elegant in Piaget's Limelight Sunny Side of Life earrings and a range of other Piaget jewellery. Viola Davis also impressed in hot pink feathers and Boucheron diamonds.

And, as you might expect, there were celebrities dressed head-to-toe in Chanel for the occasion. Most notably Penélope Cruz and Naomi Campbell. We especially loved the bracelets Campbell placed on her forearm and wrists to complement the Greek, cast shape of her dress.

Distinctive colour

As the colourful dresses made their appearance on the red carpet, so did the colourful gemstone jewellery. However, more often than not, the color was subtle, pastel and barely there, like watercolors on canvas.

Kate Moss accessorized her pink Fendi dress with a 1997 Tiffany & Co. necklace. As well as a pair of earrings and an 11-carat cocktail ring, both with morganite. Priyanka Chopra Jonas wore a Bulgari necklace with a Laguna Blu diamond. A fancy 11-carat live stone, which will be auctioned by Sotheby's in May 2023. It is currently valued at over $25 million.

American model Grace Elizabeth made pink her theme for the occasion, pairing her dress with Ana Khouri's Philippa collection. The collection includes a ring, earrings and an earring with a large ruby drop.

Yellow gold also entered as a distinctive colour, usually in combination with off-white, champagne and cream shades. Elle Fanning wore a 1955 Cartier Grain de Café necklace, once owned by Grace Kelly. One of our favorite looks from the evening was worn by Anne Hathaway. She opted for a Bulgari High Jewellery Monete necklace and bracelet that perfectly matched her custom Atelier Versace safety pin dress.

The innovators

What would the Met Gala be without the people who don't follow the crowd! We always look forward to seeing some groundbreaking performances on the night. This year, many of these looks focused on the incredible jewelry.

Let's start with Michaela Coel, who was co-chair of the 2023 event. She wore pieces by British-Ghanaian jeweller Emefa Cole made from SMO (single mine origin) gold. The designs are large, sculptural and bright yellow. Which is in stark contrast to the platinum and white gold that dominated the cream carpet.

Doja Cat was transformed into Karl Lagerfeld's favourite cat, Choupette, using extensive prosthetic makeup.

Once you get over the shock, you'll notice a 17-carat pear-shaped diamond jewel from Messika placed on her forehead. The singer also wore a custom-made bracelet from the brand. It is set with two pear-shaped diamonds of 2.5 and 4.5 carats, as well as bangles and rings.

Special mention goes to Rita Ora, who turned her wrists into canvases for her 18-carat yellow and white gold Buccellati cuffs. Also to Christine Ricci, who wore a unique collection of jewellery from Gismondi 1754. We also loved the yellow gold pieces worn by actress Julia Garner. Including an out-of-this-world cuff with malachite beads, which she paired with a Gucci dress and black cape.

Men's style

Last, but certainly not least, are men. Lapel pins were huge at the SAG Awards and the Academy Awards in 2023. Here the theme was the bow tie pin and the tie pin at the Met Gala 2023.

Robert Pattinson adorned his Dior suit with a star-shaped yellow gold pin instead of a tie. While actor Jeremy Strong wore a Homer necklace in a green hue under his collar.

Broadway star Jonathan Groff wore a vibrant gold camellia pin on his black bow tie. Simu Liu even added some diamonds with a tie pin from Jacob & Co. Ke Huy Quan wore Fred Leighton and Kwiat jewellery to transform his tie into Karl Lagerfeld style.

There were some men on the red carpet who went a little further over the line. Taika Waititi impressed with a Cartier shawl. But Brooklyn Beckham covered his neck with Mikimoto pearls. Even Brian Tyree Henry wore multiple rows of peacock-shaped pearls. Black and white pearls, some baroque-shaped, over his elaborate ruffled suit.

We don't want to tempt fate, but could this be one of the best Met Galas of all time? The jewelry may not have been overly colorful, but the power of the pearls in this case to showcase Chanel's spirit and Karl Lagerfeld's personality is palpable. Of course, we'd have a hard time picking a favorite, so we'll leave that very difficult task to you.
