Jewellery production in the EU.

Italy remains Europe's jewellery queen, but production fell by 8%.

EU production increased by 1%. Italian and French jewellery make up 70% of the total. But the gap is narrowing. In 2023 the value of the Italian sector was €1,559m, while the French sector increased from €1,267m to €1,444m.

The jewellery world remains unaffected by the crisis affecting other European manufacturing sectors. According to data released on 14 February by Eurostat, the value of total jewellery production in the European Union reached 4,363 million euros in 2023. That is an increase of 1% from 4,321 million euros in 2022.

Italy is still the top producer among the 27 Member States. With a production value of €1,559 million in 2023, representing 36% of the EU total. France follows, with a share of 33% and a value of €1,444 million. Rome and Paris account for almost 70 % of the total production of the old continent. Germany, which ranks third among European countries, stands at 507 million euros in production value. That is, 12% of the whole EU.

However, the value of Italian jewellery production, one of the leading Made in Italy manufacturing sectors, is down by 8% compared to 2022, when it reached €1,695 million. But France is recording the opposite trend. Alpine production also increased significantly from €1,267 million in 2022 to €1,444 million in 2023.

Compared to 2022, the most significant relative increases in the value of jewellery production were recorded in Croatia (+26%), the Czech Republic (+25%) and Ireland (+20%). In contrast, the largest decreases were recorded in Lithuania, where production fell by 36%, Latvia (-16%) and Italy.
