Rodgers is best known for writing and producing the hit “We Are Family” with Bernard Edwards. “We Are Family” was performed by disco idols Sister Sledge.
So it shares a name with the non-profit foundation We Are Family, founded by Rodgers and co-founder Nancy Hunt. The foundation supports programs for cultural diversity and youth empowerment.
In honour of his birthday and his charitable efforts, Bulova presents two limited edition watches.
The first “We Are Family” watch is in stainless steel with a black nylon strap. The 40mm dial has a black disc pattern with Rodgers' signature in white. It also features wood trim reminiscent of guitar decor.
The flat metal back of the case reads “Happy 70th Nile!” and includes a guitar and a personalized number. While the We Are Family Foundation logo is featured on the inner surface of the strap.
The second watch is a new version of Bulova's popular Archive Series model, the Lunar Pilot Chronograph.
Rodgers grew up during the «Space Race» between the United States and the former Soviet Union. A competition to see which country could develop the strongest spaceflight capabilities. So that history fascinates him, Bulova said.
So a nod to the history of «Space Race» is the new Lunar Pilot Chronograph Limited Edition «We Are Family», 70 pieces. It is another commemorative reissue of the original chronograph worn on August 2, 1971 during the Apollo 15 mission.
Although inspired by the original, the new watch has evolved. It therefore includes the brand's exclusive high-performance quartz movement with a frequency of 262 kHz.
The watch also features ultra-bright hands and hour markers, anti-reflective sapphire glass, tachymeter and date. All mounted in a case made of solid 316L 45 mm surgical stainless steel in a silver-tone case. Also black dial and the original Bulova logo.
It also has a black leather strap with textured finish. The special back of the case also reads “Happy 70th Nile!” with a guitar and a personalized number.
Each version of the watch in a limited edition of 70 pieces can be found on the Bulova website. All proceeds are for the We Are Family Foundation, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary.
Bulova has worked with Rodgers in the past. She had chosen him as a mentor for her “Tune of Music” campaign, which mentored young artists on their musical journey.
