You may have noticed the huge variety of sunglasses people are wearing this summer. Beyoncé has put this particular shading theme front and center during her Renaissance tour, which we see all the time in Stories on Instagram. She changes her branded glasses as often as she changes her costumes and often casually tosses them into the audience when the mood of a song changes.
However, the superstar is far from the only woman on social networks who promotes many different types of sunglasses. Jewelry designer Jennifer Fisher has an absurd number of sunglasses. Stylist June Ambrose also wears many incredible styles as well.
All this points to something. Sunglasses have clearly always been a great accessory. But now women are really investing in them and creating collections of styles to suit a variety of looks and moods.
In other words, it's the perfect time for Francis de Lara's new sunglasses collection called FDL Editions.
Photographer John-Paul Francis de Lara Pietrus started designing jewellery and luxury gold and silver jewellery and glasses decorated with precious stones a few years ago. The first collection of limited edition models was exceptional. “Each pair takes an exhaustive 250 to 700 hours to make and has a price tag that is challenging. About $24,000,” Smitha Sadanandan described the glasses in an article for this publication.
Prices for the new FDL Editions are significantly lower, between $1,000 and $2,000. And they still have luxurious details.
In July, during Paris Fashion Week, John-Paul presented for the first time two FDL Edition styles: the Aviator and Pentagon. Each will be produced in a limited edition of 300 pieces. The Ribbon Hearts frames seen here are a preview of the next retail collection. All have a small natural diamond near the FDL engraved signature on the snake-style frame arms.
Gemfields rubies or emeralds in the shape of a drop, with a vintage 1970s spirit, accentuate the lenses with UV protection. The lenses are available in either a cognac or pink shade.
John-Paul's original collection was inspired by the question he thought of when looking at paintings in Florence at the Uffizi: “What kind of sunglasses would people have worn during the Renaissance?”.
The new collection retains the feel of Renaissance art with handmade Florentine engraving techniques. He attributes them to the lightweight gold-plated aerospace-grade titanium frames.
“Aviators have a ‘Telato’ etching effect, which is made up of tiny, unevenly etched lines in a cross-hatching pattern to make it like a ‘linen texture',” explains the designer. “The Pentagons reference the ‘Rigato’ style to resemble a silk grosgrain ribbon.”.
If someone is wearing spectacular skeletons like these, they probably don't just want to throw them into the crowd like Beyoncé does when she changes the vibe. But to have a special case to carry them in.
John-Paul has it covered. The eyeglass cases are made from sustainable, vegan, eco-friendly, durable pineapple fiber leather. So they look like crocodile skin and make for a fitting case for those very special glasses.
