5 trends in jewellery for 2024.

Brighten up your jewellery collection with cool and contemporary designs that fit the moment, says Charlie Boyd.

1. Layering on necklaces

Whether you're looking at the street-style photos of tastemakers attending the FW24 runway shows or the latest Oscar red carpet looks, it's impossible to ignore the return of layering necklaces.

While some brands, like Marie Lichtenberg and Marla Aaron, do all the hard work for you. So consider pieces with lots of chains and long laces that can be folded. There are lots of imaginative ways to stack simple chains and pendants to create eclectic texture.

The chunky chains by David Yurman, Foundrae and Lauren Rubinski, for example, serve as great base pieces for additional pendants. Also personalized patterns or unusual gemstones. Don't be afraid to mix metals too: the more precious materials, the better.

2. Black gold and diamonds

Whether it's the continued preference for the fashions of the 90s and 2000s, or a backlash against the predictable influx of pastel colours every spring, jet black jewellery will be big in 2024.

Jewellers are experimenting with onyx, black enamel and especially with blackened metals. Rhodium and blackened gold add an edge to classic settings. Choose sapphires that are jet black. Discover the lustrous shine of black jade. Enjoy how black jewelry, including Spinelli Kilcollin and Yvonne Léon, pairs well with white gold, which continues to dominate this season.

3. Jewellery made of shells

Continuing from the «mermaid-core» of 2023 - a quirky result of the year's hit films The Little Mermaid and Barbie. Beachy, bohemian jewellery will be one of the top trends of 2024.

The shell patterns by Almasika and Sydney Evan can be added to your existing collection. While natural shells, pearls, palm trees and shark tooth patterns will bring coastal design codes to your spring collection. Shells - often chosen for their magical symbolism - will prove particularly popular. Also choose pieces that showcase the iridescent shimmer of abalone, conch and mother-of-pearl.

4. Earrings rings

The millennials among us will never forget the power Jennifer Lopez had wearing huge hoop earrings around 2003 in her hit music video Love Don't Cost a Thing. Twenty years later, oversized jewelry is making a comeback. And it's time to upgrade your earrings once again.

Lopez is a longtime fan of Jennifer Fisher and her «Sarah», «3» Thread« and »2« Thread» styles. The New York-based designer is the perfect choice for lightweight, demi-fine designs. So those looking to invest in a solid gold pair should opt for Anita Ko's oversized 18-karat gold design or Messika's «Move Uno Large» style. Keep the rest of your jewellery style minimal. If you're an incurable Amazon and need to add extra bling, make sure it's a modern and minimalist choker that echoes a Y2K vibe.

5. Huge Handcuffs

Expect a clear shift from bracelets with thin chains placed 10 at a time, with a step towards chunky, «one and done» designs. This is where the hero cuff comes in handy - providing a unique party bracelet. Saint Laurent and Bottega Veneta's modern and bold designs come straight from this season's runways. While jewellery designers are experimenting with sculpted gold and silver, mixed metallic tones and vibrant gemstones.

David Yurman's «Renaissance» and «Sculpted Cable» styles are iconic ode to classic bracelet design. While Amrapali London and Marina B explore semi-precious jewellery and diamond details.
