At Selfridges this winter, you are transported from the bustling Christmas crowd to a dream world of sparkle and radiance. From 20 November to 5 January 2025, the iconic Oxford Street department store is hosting Tasaki's 70th Anniversary Floating Shell exhibition. An immersive pop-up celebrating the art and innovative designs of the Japanese jewellery brand.
Tasaki began her journey in 1954. When founder Shunsaku Tasaki began cultivating and raising pearls in the idyllic coastal landscape of Kobe.
In the following decades, he continually broke new ground in the industry, reviving the nearly extinct pearl oyster. Creating pearl farms in the Kujukushima and Ise-Shima seas and also hiring the visionary Thakoon Panichgul as creative director. Today, the modern version of the gemstone is sold all over the world. Including also the brand's chic boutique on London's New Bond Street.
The Balance and Danger collections are particularly popular. Balance pieces are minimalist and contemporary, inspired by the harmonious balance of balance balls. Each ring, necklace, earring and bracelet features pearls carefully selected for their uniformity. The bold Danger series, meanwhile, features pearls set in sculptures. Gold pendants in the shape of a horn and rings with studs that mimic the jaws of a great beast for an alternative look of high aesthetics.
The floating shell exhibition has already welcomed visitors to Tokyo, Shanghai, Osaka, Taipei, Seoul and Paris.
It's not just a celebration of the pearl, but also the first opportunity for visitors to the UK to browse and buy the new Tasaki 70th anniversary collection.
The nine new tracks are a continuation of the Balance collection. With many references to the milestone anniversary. Highlights include an intricate necklace linking 70 Akoya pearls. But also one composed of five geometric bars, each adorned with seven white South Sea pearls.
Tasaki has also collaborated with a number of brands to create pieces exclusively available at the show. And they promise to dress you in pearls from head to toe.
Maybe pick up a pair of Asics' limited edition sneakers: there are three designs to choose from, from the Danger Fang style, with its vampy line of gold studs and pearls at the base of the laces, to the ornate Art Piece shoes, which are draped in a veil of more than 1,000 pearls.
The clever placement of the shiny pearls also turns a pair of matte-black wired headphones into a futuristic accessory.
Yet any of the eight pairs of sunglasses designed in collaboration with Eyevan would be an impressive proposition. There's also a message to Japanese manga art. The bold ear cuffs and black South Sea pearls with patterns of lit flames pay homage to the work of Tatsuki Fujimoto. The artist behind popular works such as Chainsaw Man, Nayuta of Prophecy and Fire Punch.
Tasaki jewellery is the modern way to wear pearls. They offer a new interpretation of a gemstone that has been treasured for centuries. And will continue to be worn for years to come.
