When Michael Douglas proposed to Catherine Zeta-Jones in 1999, the Fatal Attraction star gave her the most breathtaking diamond.
During their 24 years of marriage, the Chicago star has worn her gorgeous engagement ring on the red carpet and in interviews. But it's a different, nearly identical piece from her collection that has caught our attention lately.
“Catherine's engagement ring is a beautiful 10 carat marquise diamond ring, set in platinum and designed by Fred Leighton”. As Nilesh Rakholia, jewellery expert and founder of Abelini, tells us. He estimates the ring is worth $342,000-373,000 (£275,000-300,000).
“The shape of the diamond dates back to the 18th century. Then King Louis XV of France to pay for the making of a completely unique diamond in the shape of his mistress” lips. The cut has evolved and been modified since then, evolving into the cut we know today.".
“Other classic cuts, such as round or princess, are often more popular choices for engagement rings. But marquise-shaped diamonds offer a bold and eye-catching alternative that makes a true statement.
This certainly fits in with Michael's proposal in 1999, on New Year's Eve at his luxurious Aspen home.”.
The stone itself is also symbolic. After all, diamonds are a girl's best friend for a reason. “Diamonds are associated with strength, love and health. The perfect jewellery for an engagement ring with the promise of spending the rest of your lives together,” explains Nilesh.
“The elongated shape of the marquise cutter also allows flexibility for various positioning options. This makes this diamond completely unique. A true symbol for a unique love.”.
The ring has remained prominent on Catherine's finger for over 20 years without going out of fashion. And yet it hits a major jewelry trend for 2024.
Nilesh tells us, “The unique shape of the marquee provides the perfect balance between modern and vintage aesthetics. Vintage jewellery seems to have its day this year. Pinterest searches for “vintage wedding rings” on Pinterest note 200% year-on-year variation. Also many stars wearing vintage pieces on the Oscar carpet last month.”.
Despite its magnificent beauty, it is not the only incredible diamond in Catherine's collection. The “Masque de Zorro” star posted a photo on Instagram earlier this month, where she looked chic in a black and white image wearing oversized sunglasses. But resting her chin on her hand, she flaunted a huge diamond ring that could easily be mistaken for her engagement ring.
Jon Richard from Jon Richard Jewellery gives an insight into this stunning piece. “A round brilliant cut diamond of approximately 10 carats with a sparkling diamond bezel set in platinum. Worth around $435,000 (£350,000), it epitomises the 2024 trend for striking jewellery,” Jon explains.
“Catherine Zeta-Jones” ring perfectly captures the essence of both luxury and charm, setting the standard for elegance that impresses.".
