The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) recently awarded the seventh Gianmaria Buccellati Foundation Award for Excellence in Jewelry Design. The award was created in partnership with the Gianmaria Buccellati Foundation in 2018. It was presented during the GIA Alumni Collective's annual celebration in Tucson, AZ, to Suhan Wang.
Suhan Wang is a graduate of the GIA School in Taipei.
“On behalf of the Gianmaria Buccellati Foundation and Rosa Maria Buccellati, we would like to congratulate Mrs. Suhan Wang, this year's winner of the award. As well as all the other designers whose work has been honoured by this competition.” So said Larry French, head of North American strategies at the Foundation.
“We appreciate GIA's talented design instructors. Their skills and efforts helped students on their journey to celebrate the art of jewelry design in the highest way. But but an art that meant so much to our founder Gianmaria Buccellati.”.
The judges for this year's competition were Nanz Aalund, jewellery designer, goldsmith and educator. Cathy Calhoun, owner of Calhoun Jewelers and Victoria Gomelsky, editor-in-chief of JCK. Also Charles Lewton-Brain, jewelry designer and co-founder of the Ganoksin Project. Also Remy Rotenier, jewelry designer and design teacher. But also Shelly Sergent, collections manager of Somewhere In the Rainbow Gemstone and Jewelry Collection.
“The inspiration came from the ripe and delicate fruits in the dense jungle. It took only a few minutes to complete the sketch of this design. But it took dozens of hours to refine the details and complete the rendering.” That's what Wang, the winner of this year's competition, told us. “Participating in the GIA was a rewarding experience to develop from scratch. But it definitely gives me higher expectations for myself, which motivates me in my career.”.
