Jewellery made of traditional precious metals, such as gold, continues to fascinate the market. In 2021, gold jewellery demand increases by 52% per annum year-on-year. India and China, markets with strong cultural and historical affinity with gold, are leading the growth, according to the World Gold Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In recent years, however, the jewellery market has increasingly started to look for unconventionality. Thus it is steadily recognising the unique charm and characteristics of alternative metals. Metals such as platinum, titanium and palladium, to name a few. <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Some manufacturers have even gone a step further. They use completely non-traditional materials in their jewellery collections, such as cobalt or tungsten. Jewellers are answering the call of these modern shoppers who are constantly defying trends and leaning towards innovative ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Super metal<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Titanium has a hardness of 6 out of 10 on the Mohs scale, making it one of the hardest and most scratch-resistant jewellery metals. In comparison, gold measures about 2.5 to 3 on the Mohs scale, while platinum and palladium have hardnesses of 4 to 4.5 and 4.75, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most jewelers cast titanium with large, expensive, unique gemstones, making them sought-after pieces for the red carpet. \u201cI want to create titanium jewelry for everyday wear. Especially for the Hong Kong and mainland China market,\u201d said So.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The metal of love<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Platinum has been marketed as the precious metal for celebrating life-changing occasions such as engagements and weddings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Platinum Guild International (PGI), naturally white metal has value and significance for jewellery buyers. Platinum jewellery clarity levels are typically in the 95% to 99% range. In contrast, yellow and white karat gold contains 75% gold or less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Platinum is preferred for its density and its colour that never fades. This helps protect the sparkle of diamonds and gemstones, suggesting what the metal represents: Love, meaning and eternity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis was most evident during the pandemic. A PGI consumer survey showed that people began to reassess their life priorities. They were also valuing their relationships during this difficult time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

New manufacturers and retailers are also entering the platinum sector, especially for branded collections and high quality products.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The strongest markets for platinum jewellery are India, China, the USA and Japan. In China alone, platinum jewellery led the business recovery in 2020. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Consumer sentiment improved on the back of the economic recovery and rising demand. Also due to the redirection of funds from travel and entertainment to luxury purchases. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jewellers have also seen strong sales in recent years. They have developed innovative collections and introduced new designs and techniques, among other initiatives. However, despite a rapid recovery in 2020, China could face difficulties in 2022 due to the latest wave of Covid infections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Demand for platinum jewellery in the US exceeded pre-Covid levels in 2021. Growth is expected to strengthen this year, PGI said. Demand in Japan and India meanwhile could recover further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Japan is a mature market for platinum jewellery. Therefore, it will have a steady demand from female consumers. <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Platinum has a dominant position in the bridal jewellery segment in Japan. There is also great potential for growth among a younger generation of buyers who are beginning to appreciate the unique properties of the metal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In India, buyers increasingly prefer platinum jewellery as a symbolic gift to loved ones. Women are also buying platinum for themselves. Men's jewellery is also a promising category in the platinum jewellery market in India.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
