Bright, iridescent and luminous like a pearl. It is no wonder that the blue-green abalone has been a prized material for the peoples of the First Nations around the world for centuries.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

In the folk traditions of the American Indians, it symbolizes prosperity and healing. Indigenous tribes such as the Lakota, Navajo, and Hopi use it as a sacred object in ceremonies and rituals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In M\u0101ori culture, the abalone, or p\u0101ua, symbolizes a living connection with the moana (ocean). It also symbolizes whakapapa (ancestral lineage) and the atua (gods).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People have been wearing it for millennia. But abalone has rarely made its appearance in the modern world of high jewelry. Recently, however, more and more jewelry designers have started incorporating it into their collections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The jewelry designer Jacquie Aiche, based in California, uses this shell in her eponymous modern-bohemian brand. As she says, \u00abI am always inspired by the ocean. A pair of abalone earrings purchased by Laura Kay during her vacation in Portugal inspired the first designs for the high-quality jewelry brand M\u00e9tier. She reused them in her Tesserae collection. Tesserae explores the interplay of light through carefully selected precious stones, pearls, and abalone. \u00abIt has that romantic holiday atmosphere,\u00bb says Kay about the shell. \u00abIt evokes a sense of nostalgia.\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, this informal kitsch aesthetic and its association with low-value trinkets may have prevented the world from considering abalone as a material for high-quality jewelry to this day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Townsend points to a New Zealand law that may have influenced the global image of abalone: Between 1943 and 1987, the government imposed a ban on the export of p\u0101ua as part of resource management and conservation during the war.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Of the 54 abalone species examined by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) for the Red List of Threatened Species, 23 are threatened, vulnerable, or at risk of extinction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The wild abalone fishery is prohibited in California, where the population of white abalone in particular has decreased by 99% since the 1970s.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

In New Zealand, careful management and strict quotas for the harvesting of wild abalone have contributed to the conservation of this marine species, as have rules allowing its collection from local waters only by freedivers without breathing apparatus. However, poaching continues to be a problem, as global demand for abalone increases, while Australia and South Africa face a similar issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Careful selection of suppliers is therefore essential to ensure that jewelers do not contribute to the reduction of the species\u2019 population. Kay uses farmed abalone that grows in a freshwater environment in China. She stores the shell at her M\u00e9tier atelier in India, where artisans cut the pearl according to the needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to market research firm PW Consulting, there is a growing appeal in the market for unique precious stones, as opposed to traditional white diamonds or mass-produced pieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kay, in particular, is thrilled by the fact that each piece of abalone that transforms into a jewelry item is different, presenting a multitude of shades. \u00abSomeone might prefer a more purple abalone, while for someone else a more turquoise one might suit. For Townsend, the p\u0101ua shell creates a deeper connection to M\u0101ori culture and history. \u00abWhen I wear a p\u0101ua shell, I feel as if I're wearing armor both mentally and physically,\u00bb she says. \u00abThe contact of the p\u0101ua with my skin is such a natural relationship. When I wear a necklace, the shell hangs close to my head and mouth. This shaking motion makes me feel stable and creates a channel through which my ancestors influence the things I think and say.\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n
