While this is not a rare phenomenon, it is worth noting given the unusual dynamics currently shaping the market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many processed reserves available today, as evidenced by the number of stones registered on RapNet. But manufacturers and dealers expect shortages later in the third quarter. That's when demand starts to pick up for the holiday season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The projected shortage is due to a drop in supply, not an increase in current demand. This is because production from Russia has been out of the market for the last three months. However, several factors could affect the final outcome, as outlined in the June issue of the Rapaport Research Report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"832\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/veneticomagazine.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/diamond-rapaport-report.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2409\" srcset=\"https:\/\/veneticomagazine.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/diamond-rapaport-report.jpg 832w, https:\/\/veneticomagazine.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/diamond-rapaport-report-300x137.jpg 300w, https:\/\/veneticomagazine.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/diamond-rapaport-report-768x351.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 832px) 100vw, 832px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Alrosa's raw material has reportedly started to be put back on the market. It is expected to continue to do so with greater intensity in the coming months, if not weeks. Even as the war in Ukraine continues to rage on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The supply from Russian mining will include current production and goods it has been unable to sell since March 11. This is due to payment issues related to sanctions and shipping restrictions. As well as with the uncertainty of manufacturers on how they will handle the new Russian reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But while the US has banned imports of Russian products, other countries have not, notably China and India. Therefore, suppliers of processed diamonds have a market for Russian diamonds. They just need to make sure they separate them from non-Russian diamonds at the manufacturing stage. They also need to document and disclose the origin of all their stones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">This separation will dichotomise the market, which will create shortages in the US, where sanctions are in place.  Also on high quality brands that have implemented their own ethical standards. It could also lead to oversupply for the rest of the market where Russian products are allowed.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The origin premium is therefore starting to have an effect on trade. De Beers noted in its Diamond Insight Report 2021 that consumers were willing to pay more for diamonds and jewellery from a trusted source. But it was not clear how this could be done in the business environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New Russian processed diamonds will probably start to enter the market towards the end of the third quarter. Since it takes two to three months to process the rough and prepare the resulting inventory for sale. Dealers and manufacturers are then expected to sell the stones at a discount. In line with the lower prices they probably paid for Alrosa's raw material. More importantly, because they will not be able to trade with the US. The US accounts for over half of the world's demand for diamond jewelry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another way to look at it is that these same dealers and manufacturers may start selling non-Russian diamonds at an expensive price. This is because such diamonds are considered to be products of trusted origin in the influential US and European markets. But also due to the fact that US retailers will likely face shortages without Alrosa supply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This puts the market in a difficult position as we approach the middle of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How can one manage expectations in such a scenario?
