He was remembered by his first name: Vangelis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A wise man and rock star, guru and cosmopolitan, distant and euphoric.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Evangelos Odysseas came into the world in 1934 in Agria, Volos and became the ambassador of electronic music. Vangelis, brought the timeless codes of music, with echoes of Iannis Xenakis, the sounds of Greece, the dirges, the ancient pound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"832\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/veneticomagazine.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/vaggelis-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/veneticomagazine.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/vaggelis-2.jpg 832w, https:\/\/veneticomagazine.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/vaggelis-2-300x137.jpg 300w, https:\/\/veneticomagazine.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/vaggelis-2-768x351.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 832px) 100vw, 832px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>His image was iconic, special. Every time he played the piano, it was as if he was praying, as if he was conversing with the forces of the universe. From the \u201970s, with Aphrodite's Child and Forminx. Then with the Oscar-winning Roads of Fire in 1981, Blade Runner, El Greco and Alexander.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The music he wrote for the performance \u00abElectra\u00bb starring Irini Papa and directed by Michael Cacoyannis was a great success. During the same period, he also wrote the music for the ballet \u00abFrankenstein - Modern Prometheus\u00bb in 1985. He also wrote the music for \u00abThe beauty and the beast\u00bb in 1987, performed by the Royal Ballet at Covent Garden in London.<br><br>In 1997 he directed the opening ceremony of the 6th IAAF World Open Athletics Championships which took place at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens. His work \u00abRhythm\u00bb was selected by NASA as the official music for its mission: 2001 Odyssey to Mars. He even created the official music for the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Korea-Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">I never studied music, nor was I taught notes, he said proudly. He studied only Fine Arts and was a great painter to the end.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00abWhy do we need music? Because it is the language spoken by everyone, if not in the universe, at least certainly on Earth. You don't speak Chinese or Greek, but you certainly \u201cspeak\u201d music. Why are you whistling, why are you humming la, la, la, la at the age of two? Why did I start my music at the age of four? Because the music \u00bbcarried a deep nobility within it and awakened nobility in every listener.\".<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00abHe's a rare guy,\u00bb Roman Polanski used to say of him. \u00abSo generous, especially with his friends.\u00bb Never an elitist, he played the piano whenever the company asked, laughing heartily. \u00abHe doesn't project himself with the music he writes for films. He only wants to project the story and the emotions it evokes,\u00bb Polanski added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He felt sad that his parents didn't get to see him touch the top, the Oscars. But they lived through part of his international career. He didn't go to the Oscars himself. He was never interested in that kind of exposure and validation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00abMy fingers have run miles and miles on the keys, I've been playing for hours. I'm always working like an athlete, with my fingers, my mind, my whole body. When one has music one is never alone, our loneliness is a result of other things. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So society causes more and more loneliness. Let us be prepared for how to deal with it. A passion that led him on unexpected musical and space journeys. Through these he had confirmation of a fundamental belief of his that \u00abmusic shapes the universe\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vangelis Papathanasiou's relationship with space and his musical creation has always been long and uninterrupted, almost karmic. He has always firmly believed that music is a sacred basic force of the universe designed to uplift, inspire and heal humanity. As a result, he wrote great works inspired by and dedicated to space. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the priceless gift he received for this offer was a starling with his name on it.
