It led two friends to end up in prison and a mystery about buried coins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let me take you back to April 2022. A treasure trove of gold and silver is laid out on a small table in a back office in London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">For centuries, coins and jewellery remained undisturbed. Gold jewelry, made for a king, queen or noble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of the people who wore the ring on their finger or the bracelet on their wrist have been dead for over 1,000 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Herefordshire Hoard, as it has become known, is magnificent and has been valued at more than \u00a33 million.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the treasures are a huge gold ring, a gold bracelet with a dragon head clasp. Another pendant made of crystal rock, a silver rod and hundreds of silver coins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The people who discovered it could have become very rich indeed, but instead they are in prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, only 31 of the approximately 300 coins from the discovery have been recovered. It is part of the Herefordshire treasure found in a field in 2015. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Gold and silver had been hidden underground for about 11 centuries when Welsh metal detectorists George Powell and Layton Davies discovered it in a field near Leominster in June 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The treasure is believed to have been taken by the Anglo-Saxons from the Vikings and buried for safekeeping around 878 AD.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Legally, Powell and Davies, of Pontypridd, should have declared him. Had they done so, they could have become very rich people. Instead, they kept it, sold it to dealers and ended up in prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I've been a journalist for 25 years, but this is one of the most interesting stories I've ever covered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the years, I had to remain silent as the police investigation continued. British Museum<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The coins found in Herefordshire changed what we know about the history of England.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Three years after the trial, in April 2022, I was backstage at the British Museum where the treasure was taken to be studied and appraised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The jewellery is beautiful, but it is the coins that have changed what we know about the history of England. One of them is double-headed and shows two rulers of England in the 9th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alfred the Great, who ruled Wessex, is on one side and Ceolwulf II, of Mercia, on the other. Alfred the Great is famous, we know a lot about him, but Ceolwulf II is a mystery, he seems to disappear without a trace around 879 AD. The disc also has a thermometer on one of its parts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The jewelry was carefully wrapped in toilet paper, but stored in a plastic cake box. Despite the rather trivial container, I found myself holding my breath as it was revealed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">It definitely has the \u00abwow\u00bb factor. It looks like the buried treasure in children's stories, shiny gold and gems.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>As I put the ring on my finger, I was surprised at how heavy and large it was. It was a ring designed to be worn over the glove of a king or a nobleman, held for people to bow before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was wearing a blue nitrile glove, like the kind you see in hospitals, but it still felt amazing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What experts don't yet know is who it belonged to - and who stole it and buried it in the ground all those years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So what about the other currencies?;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Police believe they are in the hands of organised crime gangs around the world, so the hunt for the lost treasure is still on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nicola Goodwin (BBC Midlands
