Maria Antoaneta was one of the first royal clients of the Mellerio house, as reported by Laure-Isabelle Mellerio. And, more than two centuries later, she continues to influence the way the historic jewelry house perceives jewelry.

«She had a very personal approach to what she wore, preferring ribbons, frills, flowers, pearls and stones in soft colors. Her jewelry distinguished a lightness and a uniqueness that continue to inspire us. But also to guide the way we work in our workshops today,» says Mellerio.

Jewelry designer Cassandra Mamone says that Maria Antonat’s style remains timeless. As it represents the absolute coexistence of luxury, femininity, and a sense of unbridled enjoyment.

«She was the first influencer,» says Mamone at JCK. «Even centuries later, her aesthetic – soft pastel colors, bows and an abundance of pearls and diamonds – remains synonymous with luxury. It is a romantic, fantastical version of luxury that continues to attract the world.».

The queen's jewelry style, both in real life and in Coppola's film, is also returning. Because the world is ready for richer accessories, says Mamone.

The director chose to use antique jewelry instead of stage jewelry in the film.

«We went through a period of “weariness attire,” where everything started to look the same,» says Mamone. «Jewelry is a way to really shape your personal style. With the emergence of laboratory-produced diamonds, we have also seen many identical designs. As well as extremely thin rings and large stones. There is a uniqueness to Maria Antanates style.».

The jewels, then and now, still possess the same power that Antoinette used to possess, adds Mamone.

«It was a language used to communicate her social status and identity. In her time, jewelry was not simply decorative; it was a display of power,» says Mamone. «Her legacy cemented the idea that high-end jewelry is an essential accessory for a carefully curated life, and this connection between royalty, social status, and precious stones remains the foundation of how we perceive high-end jewelry today.».

Here are some of the jewelry that Maria Antueneta, if she were alive today, might have added to her accessory collection.
