With improved quantitative and qualitative characteristics, the commemorative International Exhibition of Jewelry, Watches, Precious Stones, Machinery and Equipment KOSMIMA was completed. Closing 40 years of life, it proved once again the special importance it has for the jewelry industry. 

The number of visitors to KOSMIMA was increased by 3.3% (2,282) compared to last year’s event. While the exhibitors appeared particularly satisfied, placing particular emphasis on the quality aspects of the visitors, they arrived at the International Exhibition Center of Thessaloniki from various regions of Greece and 31 countries. Specifically, 15.7% of the trade visitors were foreigners from Europe, Asia, Africa and America.

As the exhibitors noted characteristically, these were professionals who visited the exhibition with the clear intention of entering into commercial transactions. In addition to Greece, companies from Estonia, Bulgaria and Turkey participated in this year’s event. While the exhibition was accompanied by a program of invited trade visitors from within the country. The exhibition space occupied by KOSMIMA increased by 5.76% (1,432 sq.m.). While the number of exhibitors reached 73, the size increased by 12.31% compared to last year's event. 

KOSMIMA's steady upward trajectory since 2022 is linked to its role as a stable and reliable meeting point for the industry for sampling and preparing retail stores ahead of the Christmas holiday season. This development confirms the exhibition's importance for the professional community and the market in the wider region.

As part of KOSMIMA, the 37th Panhellenic Competition for Jewelry Design themed «Verde: The Power of Life» was also held, organized by the Panhellenic Federation of Goldsmiths, Silversmiths, and Watchmakers (POVAKΩ) in collaboration with the THESS-HELEXPO. Through 50 nominations, the first three prizes emerged, while 6 honorary awards were also given.

The shell of the abalone has historically been valued by indigenous cultures. It now features in luxury jewelry collections thanks to its unique colors and organic beauty.

Its reputation had suffered due to its use in mass-produced souvenirs. But it is being restored thanks to the innovation of the designers and to respect for culture.

Sustainable sourcing is crucial, as many abalone species are threatened by overfishing and environmental changes. This fact drives designers to use farmed shells or those that have been collected responsibly.

Bright, iridescent and luminous like a pearl. It is no wonder that the blue-green abalone has been a prized material for the peoples of the First Nations around the world for centuries.

In the folk traditions of the American Indians, it symbolizes prosperity and healing. Indigenous tribes such as the Lakota, Navajo, and Hopi use it as a sacred object in ceremonies and rituals.

In Māori culture, the abalone, or pāua, symbolizes a living connection with the moana (ocean). It also symbolizes whakapapa (ancestral lineage) and the atua (gods).

People have been wearing it for millennia. But abalone has rarely made its appearance in the modern world of high jewelry. Recently, however, more and more jewelry designers have started incorporating it into their collections.

The jewelry designer Jacquie Aiche, based in California, uses this shell in her eponymous modern-bohemian brand. As she says, «I am always inspired by the ocean. And the abalone is one of the treasures of Mother Nature that hides much more than what appears at first glance. I really like the way its discreet shine reflects the light with every movement you make. And I have found that its combination with diamonds and gold further enhances its organic beauty. There is something special about balancing the magic of nature with luxury.»

Also, the connection with the sea attracted Melanie Georgacopoulos. She has become known for her innovative designs with pearls. «The colors of the abalone are particularly beautiful and charming,» she says. «It has a very maritime feel.»

Melanie Georgacopoulos introduced the abalone into her modern collection «Cube». Pairing it with lavender-colored freshwater pearls, which she carefully selected to match. The result is a sculptural and modern reinterpretation of the natural material.

«This is a shell that is rarely used in jewelry making. And, in my opinion, it has incredible potential thanks to its unique color play and lines,» he notes. «Because of its structure and lines, it makes each piece look unique. Although each Cube has a standardized shape, due to the patterns of the shell, each one comes out different.».

A pair of abalone earrings purchased by Laura Kay during her vacation in Portugal inspired the first designs for the high-quality jewelry brand Métier. She reused them in her Tesserae collection. Tesserae explores the interplay of light through carefully selected precious stones, pearls, and abalone. «It has that romantic holiday atmosphere,» says Kay about the shell. «It evokes a sense of nostalgia.».

However, this informal kitsch aesthetic and its association with low-value trinkets may have prevented the world from considering abalone as a material for high-quality jewelry to this day.

Townsend points to a New Zealand law that may have influenced the global image of abalone: Between 1943 and 1987, the government imposed a ban on the export of pāua as part of resource management and conservation during the war.

«After the ban and the permits expired, the tourism industry flooded the market with commemorative pendants and earrings,» he explains. «They were considered cheap and only suitable for teenagers or children. This obviously damaged the image of the pāua shell with the public, and it took many years to reverse this situation.».

As with all natural materials, the sustainability of abalone is a matter of concern. Climate change, the increase in ocean temperatures, and the popularity of both the meat and the shell of this mollusk have led to overfishing and near-extinction in many parts of the world. Of the 54 abalone species examined by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) for the Red List of Threatened Species, 23 are threatened, vulnerable, or at risk of extinction.

The wild abalone fishery is prohibited in California, where the population of white abalone in particular has decreased by 99% since the 1970s.

In New Zealand, careful management and strict quotas for the harvesting of wild abalone have contributed to the conservation of this marine species, as have rules allowing its collection from local waters only by freedivers without breathing apparatus. However, poaching continues to be a problem, as global demand for abalone increases, while Australia and South Africa face a similar issue.

Careful selection of suppliers is therefore essential to ensure that jewelers do not contribute to the reduction of the species’ population. Kay uses farmed abalone that grows in a freshwater environment in China. She stores the shell at her Métier atelier in India, where artisans cut the pearl according to the needs.

«You have to be very careful when it comes to the procurement of any natural material such as abalone. It should be used commercially in the right way and not affect the wild nature during the process,» he says.

In an era where jewelry customers seek colorful, unique designs, it is logical that there is growing interest and use of the shiny, spiral abalone patterns. According to market research firm PW Consulting, there is a growing appeal in the market for unique precious stones, as opposed to traditional white diamonds or mass-produced pieces.

Kay, in particular, is thrilled by the fact that each piece of abalone that transforms into a jewelry item is different, presenting a multitude of shades. «Someone might prefer a more purple abalone, while for someone else a more turquoise one might suit. I think that’s the beauty of using any natural material like abalone. It’s absolutely unique every time.».

Aiche also points out the emotional reaction that the pieces of abalone from her customers evoke. «That's what makes them so powerful. They speak to the heart, inspiring a sense of calm and presence.»

For Townsend, the pāua shell creates a deeper connection to Māori culture and history. «When I wear a pāua shell, I feel as if I're wearing armor both mentally and physically,» she says. «The contact of the pāua with my skin is such a natural relationship. When I wear a necklace, the shell hangs close to my head and mouth. This shaking motion makes me feel stable and creates a channel through which my ancestors influence the things I think and say.»

The global significance of abalone shows that there is something in its shell that touches people’s hearts. However, as with all natural raw materials in the jewelry industry, ensuring sustainability and traceability is of utmost importance. Ultimately, the goal is to find ways to use abalone that honor its past and ensure that future generations can experience its magic first-hand.

Nikos Koulis’s collection «77» was born from an unexpected source: a pair of sunglasses. Not any sunglasses, but a pair of Jacques Marie Mage frames that were on the desk of jewelry designer Nikos Koulis in Athens. The synthetic taffeta looked like it was coming to life in the light, changing from shades of honey gold to brown chocolate. Most people would have worn them and gone for lunch. But he saw the elements for a diamond jewel.

A year later, this unexpected material was found at the center, combined with diamonds and gold, in pieces that are simultaneously brilliant, carved, and slightly subversive.

The collection, named after his year of birth, is a kind of love letter to the free spirit of the 70s, when personal style was more about attitude than rules. Think Bianca Jagger and Grace Jones at Studio 54. There are sexy bracelets and beaded earrings dripping with diamond beads, large sculptural rings with impressive diamonds, and necklaces adorned with beaded diamonds. The pieces have the grandeur of vintage glamour, but give a completely modern feel.

The «Nikos Koulis 77» collection is already attracting attention

When Nikos Koulis presented the collection in Paris in July, the reaction was immediate. Curiosity quickly turned into desire, and now there is a waiting list for the pieces.

At first glance, the warm marble oxalic acid looks like a hard stone, polished to a high gloss. But when you bring it into the light, something unexpected happens: the material glows, revealing an almost liquid transparency. It even gives even large diamonds a more casual, everyday look.

It is particularly appealing in an era when women are looking for jewelry with personality and originality, as well as pieces that effortlessly pair with both a white T-shirt and jeans and a dinner at an official event.

Naturally, to make something so effortless requires an almost absolute effort. The process begins in Germany, where blocks of oxalic citrate, a renewable material of plant origin, are specially manufactured for Kouli. In his laboratory in Athens, the material is carved into voluminous, rounded shapes designed to follow the contours of the body. Then, the material is sent to an Italian laboratory where it is processed to enhance its durability and coated with a layer of semi-transparent enamel for extra shine and hardness.

And now comes the hard part: the diamonds.

Diamonds meet their most unexpected combination

Unlike gold or platinum, oxalic acid is not naturally suitable for traditional techniques of placing precious stones. Koullis had to develop a hidden mechanism that allows the gold bases to securely attach to the oxalic acid without disrupting the liquid silhouette of the piece. What you see is the contrast between the tortoise’s radiant color and the icy white diamonds—softness and shine, warmth and coolness.

«A client of mine recently said to me: “Are you more creative or more crazy?”,” Koullis told me. The answer is probably both.

Nikos Koulis is known for using precious materials in exciting and innovative ways. In previous collections, diamonds seem to float within semi-transparent mineral crystal, while magnificent diamonds and emeralds have been placed on bold minimalist bases, with minimal visible metal to explain how they remain in place. His jewelry has always been about the tension between technical craftsmanship and visual comfort.

But the collection «77» takes this instinct to a new level. Instead of making precious materials look lightweight, it managed to make ordinary materials look precious.

«What impressed me most was how the reflection of the sun transformed the material into something magical,» says Koulis. «The colors change in the light.".

Why there are not two pieces that are exactly the same

It is these very properties that also make the material unpredictable. There are no two pieces of tartare that are identical. Some glow in amber and honey shades; others have streaks in brown chocolate. Koulis personally chooses the material for each design, taking into account how the pattern will interact with the shape and arrangement of the diamonds. What may seem random is not at all the case.

The tartare, in particular, has a timeless appeal — equally classic, glamorous, and slightly wild. «Many women are drawn to patterns with animal designs,» says Koulis. It’s an familiar field, but combined with diamonds it suddenly looks new and daring.

Despite the innovation of the material, Koulis insists that this innovation itself was never the goal. He is interested in creating jewelry that lasts, pieces that will still look relevant decades from now. The 1970s may have inspired the collection, but he is not interested in reproducing the past. He borrows its boldness.

Nikos Koulis is already thinking about the next step. «Curiosity always leads you to unknown paths,» he says, «and that excites me.».

Considering that his last creative deviation began with a pair of sunglasses that were on his desk, it is probably worth paying attention to what he leaves around him.

Sales of Greek jewelry are set to decline by at least 15% by 2026, according to Peter Kalapakidis. The president of the Panhellenic Federation of Silver and Gold Goldsmiths, Silversmiths, Jewelers and Watchmakers (POVAKΩ), as well as the Association of Goldsmiths and Watchmakers of Thessaloniki, spoke to Naumtebora.

Petros Kalpakiades described 2026 as a difficult year for the sector. Citing energy costs, the extremely high price of gold, and competition from neighboring countries. But also the continued imposition of a 10% luxury tax on jewelry worth 1,000 euros or more. Household incomes are also squeezed by rising energy bills and the broader cost of living crisis.

At the same time, incoming tourism in many regions, especially in northern Greece, creates relatively little purchasing power. Visitors from neighboring Balkan countries account for a large share of arrivals. But they often do not have the financial ability to buy gold jewelry.

Another problem for the sector, according to POVAKO, is the requirement for an advance VAT payment for raw materials.

The way luxury tax is applied puts Greek manufacturers in a particularly difficult position, the federation argued. Domestic producers must pay the tax at a much higher value than importers. Based on wholesale or retail prices. Which pay a tax calculated on the cost of acquiring the goods.

The luxury tax also undermines the competitiveness of Greek jewelry. Compared to products sold in neighboring markets, where neither this tax nor contributions to raw materials such as gold, silver, precious and semi-precious stones are applied.

POVAKO calls for the abolition of VAT advances on raw materials. A requirement that does not apply in neighboring countries such as Cyprus and Italy. Anastasia Argyrou, president of the Association of Silver and Gold Dealers of Rhodes, pointed out two additional concerns in her comments at Nautemporiki. These are the cruise companies that direct passengers to buy jewelry in Turkey and the competition from the museums’ shops.

The latter, he noted, are no longer limited to the sale of copies of exhibits but also of products in stock that are available in retail stores.

He also expressed concerns about the tax arrangements, particularly VAT, governing the museums' shops. These include 27 shops operated by the Organization for the Management and Development of Cultural Resources (ODAP), which were recently awarded to a private company following a tender.

The 40th KOSMIMA exhibition, organized by the THESS-Helexpo with the support of POVAKO, will run from October 17 to October 19, with the participation of exhibitors increasing by 10% this year.

A total of 73 exhibitors from Greece, Turkey, Estonia and Bulgaria will participate in this year’s event.

Silver and goldwork, cultural heritage and creativity became bridges of learning, collaboration and intercultural communication.

The Association of Silver and Gold Goldsmiths of Thessaloniki (SSAG) hosted a group of adults from Poland’s Parzęczew from October 1st to 6th 2026 in Thessaloniki. As part of the European Erasmus+ educational mobility program.

The organization Fundacja Edukacji Rozwoju i Innowacji (FERI) was the implementing agency. While the SChATH took on the hosting and implementation of educational activities. Activities that linked the art of silver and goldwork with Greek history and cultural heritage. But also with creativity, digital learning and sustainability.

From cultural heritage to creation

A special place in the program was occupied by the visit to Vergina as well as the Museum of the Aigai. Where the participants learned about the wealth of ancient Macedonian history and were inspired by the archaeological findings and jewelry of the era.

This experience served as the starting point for experiential workshops in silver and goldwork, which were held at the MOKUME ART STUDIES premises. Under the guidance of instructors Christina Maikidou Putrino and Eleni Tazepsidou, the participants designed and created their own metal jewelry.

Each piece of jewelry was a personal work, connecting historical inspiration with contemporary creation. The participants returned to Poland with their handmade jewelry as tangible mementos of their learning and cultural experience in Thessaloniki.

Lifelong learning has no age limit

The program highlighted the importance of the active participation of older adults in new learning experiences. Through practical training, collaboration, contact with cultural heritage, and the use of digital tools, participants had the opportunity to develop skills, express themselves creatively, and exchange knowledge and experiences.

At the same time, the common activities strengthened communication as well as intercultural cooperation. The linguistic difficulties that inevitably arose were overcome through creation, laughter, and a mutual willingness to participate.

Mobility confirmed that lifelong learning is an important tool for personal development, social connection, and active aging. While art and crafts can serve as a common language between people from different countries and backgrounds.

The SChAHT in European educational cooperation

Through its participation in European mobility activities, the SCHATH highlights the educational and cultural role of Greek silver and goldwork. It also offers the opportunity to connect traditional know-how with modern adult education.

The Guild expresses its warm thanks to the FERI organization, the participants from Parzęczew, and the partners who contributed to the implementation of the program.

This hospitality was a unique experience of exchanging knowledge, culture and human values, leaving the best prospects for future collaborations.

Because learning continues at every age and creating brings us closer together, beyond borders and languages.

Four decades after its first edition in 1986, KOSMIMA remains the only exhibition of silverware and watchmaking in Northern Greece. With its festive character in full effect, this year’s International Exhibition of Jewelry, Watches, Precious Stones, Machinery and Equipment KOSMIMA – which takes place from October 17 to 19 at stands 8, 9 and 10 – brings together 73 exhibitors compared to 65 last year, recording a 12.31% increase, while the exhibition space amounts to 1,432 square meters, up from 1,354 square meters last year (5.76%). Companies from Greece, as well as from Estonia, Bulgaria and Turkey, are participating. This year the exhibition is also accompanied by a program of invited trade visitors from Greece.

Alongside its commercial aspect, KOSMIMA also maintains its creative identity. The 37th Panhellenic Competition for Artistic Jewelry Design, organized by the Panhellenic Federation of Goldsmiths, Jewelers, and Watchmakers (POVAKOO) in collaboration with HELEXPO and the Athens Expo Center (ATHEX), titled «Verde: The Power of Life», was successfully concluded and the award ceremony will take place on Sunday morning, October 18th.

«The increased quantitative figures of this year's event show that the industry is using KOSMIMA as a sales tool, at an ideal time to prepare for the festive season,» noted Mr. Andreas Mavrommatis, CEO of the THESSALONIKI-HELEXPO, in a press conference today ahead of the opening of the exhibition. He emphasized that the contribution of the POBAKΩ was crucial in its evolution over the years. «Together with the Federation, we developed the Athens International Jewellery Show in Athens, with which KOSMIMA serves as a conduit, as the two exhibitions share a common exhibition platform, the product of the effort and strategic initiative of THESSALONIKI-HELEXPO and the POBAKΩ. Also, on this anniversary we must remember that the birth of KOSMIMA was significantly influenced by the Association of Silver Goldsmiths of Thessaloniki and the Association of Watchmakers of Thessaloniki,» he pointed out.

Mr. Petros Kalpakiadis, President of POBAKΩ, described this year’s KOSMIMA as dynamic, noting that the 40 events show the potential of the industry as well as the exhibition organization. «The entire industry supports KOSMIMA,» he noted, while referring to the 37th Panhellenic Competition of Artistic Jewelry Design, he announced that 10 schools participated with 38 student entries and 46 works, as well as four professional entries with an equal number of works. He emphasized that this year at the University of Ioannina four courses in silver and gold work have been added, with the interest of the students being increased.

The challenges faced by DETH-HELEXPO for the organization of the 1st edition^from In 1986, the general manager of the company, Mr. Alexis Tsaxirlis, reported, in the context of a brief historical overview, that for the first time security systems with cameras had been installed in such a large area. «There was no similar exhibition in Southeast Europe at that time,» he noted, adding that KOSMIMA and the THESS-HELEXPO and POBAKOV cooperation model are a model for how partnerships should be developed. 

KOSMIMA is exclusively addressed to professionals and will operate on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 to 20:00 and on Mondays from 11:00 to 19:00.

During KOSMIMA, the International Exhibition and Conference Center of Thessaloniki also hosts a series of other events and exhibitions: the Logistics Expo and Transports Thessaloniki and Truck Van Expo, the Panhellenic Festival of Creators By Hand Festival in the framework of HANYT, the Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience exhibition that continues in booth 5, and the commemorative exhibition «100 Years of Future at the 14th Thessaloniki International Fair» at MOMus-Museum of Contemporary Art. Also, the registration center of the 14th^ου The International Night Marathon of Thessaloniki is hosted on Thursday and Friday in booth 2.
