Ευρήματα από αποστολές της NASA δείχνουν ότι στον Άρη μπορεί να σχηματίζονται ορυκτά παρόμοια με ρουμπίνια, ζαφείρια και οπάλιο, παρέχοντας νέες σημαντικές πληροφορίες για το γεωλογικό του παρελθόν του πλανήτη. Πρόσφατες αναλύσεις δεδομένων από το ρόβερ Perseverance της NASA δείχνουν ότι ο «Κόκκινος Πλανήτης» ενδέχεται να φιλοξενεί ίχνη από τα ίδια ορυκτά που συνθέτουν τα ρουμπίνια, τα ζαφείρια και το οπάλιο στη Γη.

Αναλυτικότερα, όπως αναφέρει το Scientific American, με τη χρήση φασματόμετρου μέσης υπέρυθρης ζώνης ακτινοβολίας του ρόβερ, γνωστού ως Percy, ανιχνεύθηκαν σε ανοιχτόχρωμα βότσαλα μέσα στον κρατήρα Jezero υψηλές ποσότητες κορουνδίου, μια μορφή οξειδωμένου αλουμινίου. Αυτή είναι η οικογένεια ορυκτών που περιλαμβάνει ακριβούς πολύτιμους λίθους όπως ρουμπίνια και ζαφείρια. Ωστόσο, τα ευρήματα είναι εξαιρετικά μικρά. Συχνά σε μικροκλίμακα, και δεν παρουσιάζουν τη διαύγεια ή τη δομή που θα τους έδινε εμπορική αξία.

Ορυκτά που αποκαλύπτουν το παρελθόν

Η σημασία τους δεν βρίσκεται στην αισθητική ή οικονομική τους αξία, αλλά στις συνθήκες κάτω από τις οποίες δημιουργήθηκαν. Στη Γη, ο σχηματισμός τέτοιων ορυκτών απαιτεί έντονη πίεση και υψηλές θερμοκρασίες. Συνθήκες που συνήθως σχετίζονται με τη δράση τεκτονικών πλακών και γεωλογικά ενεργών περιοχών. Ο Άρης, όμως, δεν διαθέτει ενεργή τεκτονική όπως η Γη. Για τον λόγο αυτό, οι επιστήμονες θεωρούν ότι τέτοιοι σχηματισμοί μπορεί να προέκυψαν από βίαιες προσκρούσεις αστεροειδούς, κατά την οποία το αλουμίνιο στον αστεροειδή συγχωνεύτηκε γρήγορα με ορυκτά του Άρη.

Η Κάντις Μπέντφορντ, είναι ερευνήτρια στο Πανεπιστήμιο Περντού και εκ των συντακτών της έκθεσης που δημοσιεύθηκε στο Journal of Geophysical Research. Εξήγησε πως τα ορυκτά στον Άρη δεν είναι στην πραγματικότητα πολύτιμα, επειδή δημιουργούνται σε δευτερόλεπτα από την πρόσκρουση. Όπως είπε, είναι πολύ διαφορετικά από τους λίθους που βρίσκονται στη Γη. Δεν έχουν την ίδια λάμψη και τείνουν να είναι μικροσκοπικά για να εφαρμοστούν σε κοσμήματα. Με κάποια να είναι μικρότερα του ενός χιλιοστού. Την ίδια στιγμή, στοιχεία που συγκεντρώθηκαν από τον δορυφόρο Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, αλλά και τον Πέρσι, αναδεικνύουν την πιθανή παρουσία οπαλίου. Όπως και στην περίπτωση του κορουνδίου, και σε αυτή πρόκειται απλώς για ίχνη, αλλά το ενδιαφέρον είναι άλλο.

Τα ορυκτά αυτά στη Γη σχηματίζονται όταν νερό διεισδύει σε ρωγμές πετρωμάτων και στη συνέχεια εξατμίζεται. Αφήνοντας πίσω του αποθέσεις που με τον χρόνο δημιουργούν χαρακτηριστικές δομές. Η πιθανή ανίχνευσή τους στον Άρη αποτελεί μια ισχυρή ένδειξη ότι στο παρελθόν ο πλανήτης διέθετε σημαντικές ποσότητες νερού. Πιθανώς σε υπόγειες δεξαμενές ή επιφανειακά συστήματα που έχουν πλέον χαθεί. Εξάλλου, παλαιότερη αποστολή στον Άρη με το Mars Phoenix Lander επιβεβαίωσε την παρουσία πάγου στον πλανήτη.

Διαπλανητικά ταξίδια αγορών;

Παρότι τέτοιες ανακαλύψεις προκαλούν ενθουσιασμό και δημιουργούν εικόνες ενός πλανήτη γεμάτο θησαυρούς, η επιστημονική κοινότητα είναι επιφυλακτική. Όπως αναφέρουν οι ερευνητές, στον Άρη δε βρίσκονται πολύτιμοι λίθοι όπως στην Γη. Και ακόμα και αν ίσχυε κάτι τέτοιο, η εξόρυξή τους στον Κόκκινο Πλανήτη δε θα είχε νόημα. Αφού τα κόστη μιας τέτοιας διαδικασίας θα ήταν άσκοπη.

Μολονότι δε μπορούν να αξιοποιηθούν, προσφέρουν πολύτιμες πληροφορίες στους ειδικούς για το γεωλογικό παρελθόν του πλανήτη, τη σύνθεση και το σχηματισμό του. Οι επιστήμονες επισημαίνουν πως ακόμα και αν η εύρεση περαιτέρω στοιχείων θα βοηθούσε σημαντικά, αυτό σημαίνει ότι θα έπρεπε να φτάσει στη Γη δείγμα για ανάλυση με ηλεκτρονικό μικροσκόπιο. Κάτι τέτοιο, ωστόσο, φαντάζει σενάριο… επιστημονικής φαντασίας. Αφού τους περασμένους μήνες, όπως επισημαίνει το δημοσίευμα, η αμερικανική κυβέρνηση ακύρωσε προγραμματισμένη αποστολή. Παρά τα χρόνια σχεδιασμού και τα εκατομμύρια δολάρια που δαπανήθηκαν για αυτόν τον στόχο.

Το ρολόι Audemars Piguet x Swatch είναι εδώ και πραγματικά έχει ξεσηκώσει τον κόσμο.

Το «Royal Pop» είναι ένας συνδυασμός του Royal Oak της Audemars Piguet, του οκτάπλευρου εμβληματικού μοντέλου του κόσμου των μηχανικών ρολογιών που ξεκινά από 30.000 δολάρια, και του αρθρωτού ρολογιού Pop της Swatch από τη δεκαετία του 1980, που κοστίζει 40 δολάρια.

Ωστόσο, δεν πρόκειται για ρολόι χειρός, αλλά για ρολόι τσέπης με κάσα από βιοκεραμικό υλικό, το οποίο μπορεί να τοποθετηθεί και να αφαιρεθεί από το αντίστοιχο κορδόνι (πωλείται ξεχωριστά), το οποίο διατίθεται σε τρία διαφορετικά μήκη.

Η Swatch Group και η Audemars Piguet επιβεβαίωσαν τη συνεργασία τους, για την οποία κυκλοφορούσαν φήμες εδώ και καιρό. Επίσης στο Instagram στις 8 Μαΐου παρουσίασαν επίσημα τη συλλογή Royal Pop .

Ο ενθουσιασμός αυξήθηκε και εξαπλώθηκε όλη την εβδομάδα και μέχρι την επίσημη ημέρα κυκλοφορίας του Royal Pop. Αλλά η Swatch Group αναγκάστηκε να κλείσει τα καταστήματα λόγω της «ασφάλειας του κοινού».

Πλήθη, αποτελούμενα από συλλέκτες αλλά και άτομα που ήθελαν να μεταπωλήσουν τα ρολόγια για γρήγορο κέρδος, έγιναν ανεξέλεγκτα σε μερικά καταστήματα Swatch σε όλο τον κόσμο.

Βίντεο που αναρτήθηκαν στα μέσα κοινωνικής δικτύωσης δείχνουν κόσμο να σπρώχνεται και να συμπιέζεται. Καθώς και την αστυνομία να παρεμβαίνει για να ελέγξει τα πλήθη σε καταστήματα στη Νέα Υόρκη, την Ατλάντα, το Λονδίνο και αλλού.

Το Σάββατο, ο Όμιλος Swatch δημοσίευσε μια δήλωση στα μέσα κοινωνικής δικτύωσης. Ανέφερε μεταξύ άλλων: «Για να διασφαλίσουμε την ασφάλεια τόσο των πελατών όσο και του προσωπικού μας στα καταστήματα Swatch, σας παρακαλούμε να μην συρρέετε μαζικά στα καταστήματά μας για να αποκτήσετε αυτό το προϊόν. Η συλλογή Royal Pop θα παραμείνει διαθέσιμη για αρκετούς μήνες.» 

Ο λιανοπωλητής και κατασκευαστής ρολογιών επιβεβαίωσε μέσω email τη Δευτέρα ότι αναγκάστηκε να κλείσει περίπου 20 από τα 220 καταστήματα παγκοσμίως που διαθέτουν τη συλλογή Royal Pop λόγω του συνωστισμού. Αποδίδοντας την ευθύνη για το χάος στις μεγάλες ουρές και την ανεπαρκή ασφάλεια των εμπορικών κέντρων.

Ανέφερε: «Οι ουρές των ενδιαφερόμενων πελατών ήταν εξαιρετικά μεγάλες. Και επίσης η οργάνωση ορισμένων εμπορικών κέντρων δεν ήταν επαρκής για να διαχειριστεί αυτό το επίπεδο προσέλευσης.»

Η Swatch Group συνέκρινε το πανδαιμόνιο του Royal Pop με την κυκλοφορία του MoonSwatch. Του ρολογιού που κατασκευάστηκε σε συνεργασία με την Omega, τον Μάρτιο του 2022. Ακόμη ανέφερε ότι η κατάσταση «έχει πλέον ομαλοποιηθεί κάπως».

Πρόσθεσε ότι η συνεργασία έχει δημιουργήσει εκατομμύρια κλικ στον ιστότοπό της και «κυριολεκτικά κάνει τα μέσα κοινωνικής δικτύωσης να εκρήγνυνται». Με 11 δισεκατομμύρια προβολές τόσο μέσω ιδιωτικού όσο και μέσω οργανικού περιεχομένου.

«Συνολικά, η συλλογή Royal Pop γοητεύει ολόκληρο τον κόσμο. Κυρίως επειδή το Royal Pop, προς μεγάλη έκπληξη, δεν είναι ρολόι χειρός», δήλωσε ο Όμιλος Swatch.

Υπάρχουν οκτώ μοντέλα Royal Pop. Otto Rosso (ροζ και κόκκινο), Huit Blanc (λευκό με πολύχρωμους δείκτες, δείκτες ωρών και βίδες στη στεφάνη). Επίσης Green Eight (σκούρο πράσινο), Blaue Acht (ανοιχτό μπλε και ανοιχτό πράσινο). Ακόμη Lan Ba (σκούρο μπλε και ανοιχτό μπλε), Otg Roz (ροζ και κίτρινο), Ocho Negro (μαύρο και λευκό. Και τέλος Orenji Hachi (σκούρο μπλε και κόκκινο).

Η Swatch Group δήλωσε ότι επέλεξε τον αριθμό οκτώ για τη συλλογή περιορισμένης έκδοσης ως αναφορά στην οκταγωνική κάσα του Royal Oak και τις οκτώ βίδες στη στεφάνη. Τα ονόματα των ρολογιών περιλαμβάνουν επίσης τον αριθμό «οκτώ» σε διάφορες γλώσσες.

Οι εκδόσεις σε γαλάζιο/σκούρο μπλε και ροζ και κίτρινο είναι σε στυλ Savonnette. Με την κορώνα τοποθετημένη στις 3 η ώρα και ένα μικρό  υποδείκτη δευτερολέπτων στις 6 η ώρα.

Τα άλλα έξι είναι ρολόγια τσέπης σε στυλ Lépine. Που σημαίνει ότι η κορώνα βρίσκεται στις 12 η ώρα, όπως σε ένα χρονόμετρο.

Το Savonnette Royal Pop διατίθεται στην τιμή των 420 δολαρίων, ενώ το μοντέλο Lépine κοστίζει 400 δολάρια.

Το συνοδευτικό κορδόνι από δέρμα μοσχαριού διατίθεται σε τρία μήκη. Από 7,08 έως 26,5 ίντσες και πωλείται ξεχωριστά και κοστίζει 45 δολάρια.

Και τα οκτώ ρολόγια διαθέτουν διαφανή πίσω κάλυμμα με το λογότυπο Royal Pop.

Λειτουργούν με μια νέα έκδοση χειροκίνητου κουρδίσματος του μηχανισμού Sistem 51 της Swatch. Ενός μηχανικού μηχανισμού που συναρμολογείται εξ ολοκλήρου με μηχανικά μέσα. Διαθέτει αποθεματικό ενέργειας 90 ωρών.

Το Royal Pop διατίθεται επί του παρόντος σε δώδεκα καταστήματα στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες. Θα παραμείνει στην πώληση για αρκετούς μήνες, όπως σημείωσε η Swatch Group. Οι αγορές περιορίζονται σε ένα ρολόι ανά άτομο ανά ημέρα.

Perhaps it's Versace's return to the fashion forefront. Or perhaps it's the imminent return of «Rivals.» The television series based on Jilly Cooper's best-sellers, this month. Whatever the reason, in the world of jewelry, the revival of the shapes, colors, and material combinations of the 80s is in full swing.

Impressive bracelets are suddenly becoming fashionable. A new My Dior bracelet is made from yellow and white gold, creating a striking contrast. And it's worn oversized on the wrist.

Ali Khalil of Antwerp-based brand Levuma also crafts L’Armure bracelets from titanium. In midnight blue or yellow gold, which is then worked to achieve a uniquely textured finish. Both are adorned with hand-set white diamonds. A third option comes from the Parisian haute joaillerie house Chaumet of Place Vendôme. Where a rose gold Bee de Chaumet bracelet is set with brilliant-cut diamonds.

«The 1980s influences my work through the use of gemstones and bold designs,’ says Ananya Malhotra. »I am particularly inspired by the era's strong silhouettes, architectural forms, and statement pieces.« Malhotra studied at London's Central Saint Martins. She founded her business in 2017 and creates pieces such as the Chakra Twin beaded necklace. The design's moonstone and clear quartz beads offer a fresh take on princess-style pearl strands. Isabel Delgado and Anita Ko are two other independent designers. Both draw inspiration from the design vocabulary of the 1980s.

Traditional brands are also digging directly into their archives. At Tiffany & Co., designs by Paloma Picasso, who first collaborated with the New York brand in 1980, continue to be popular. A new addition to the collection is the lifelike Olive Leaf earrings, handcrafted in yellow gold and adorned with diamonds and amethysts.

At Bulgari, mini hoop earrings are a new addition to the iconic Tubogas collection by the Roman brand. Based on a jewelry-making technique with coiled gold bands, Tubogas pieces date back to 1948, but it was four decades later that their silhouette rose to prominence.

«The 1980s represent a vibrant expression of daring, courage, and experimentation, values that perfectly align with Bulgari's spirit,» states Lucia Silvestri, Executive Director of Jewelry Creation. «Its fluid, sculptural coils embody a harmonious synthesis of functionality and aesthetics, remaining impressively contemporary even today. Design is always a dialogue between past and future.»

Within the workshops of Milanese jeweler Pomellato, Artistic Director Vincenzo Castaldo perfects unique high jewelry pieces, such as necklaces, rings, and other items that draw inspiration from the brand's design heritage. Selected pieces pay homage to the 1980s, a period during which Pomellato adopted architectural forms and striking volumes. «It was a foundational decade, characterized by an unrestrained creative freedom that permeated every field, from fashion to design, from art to culture.

»It was a time of great courage, marked by a strong desire for experimentation and exploration,« explains Castaldo. »For this reason, the decade remains a benchmark: it reminds us that creativity always needs this kind of push. For me, staying connected to that energy is a great source of inspiration.".

The 1980s also proved to be stylistically significant for Cartier. That’s when avant-garde material combinations and striking motifs – such as a series of panthers, sculpted in relief along a necklace – set the tone. ’The jewelry of the 1980s pushed the exploration of possibilities even further, particularly in terms of designs, inspirations, and materials,« says Pierre Rainero, Cartier's Director of Image, Style, and Heritage.

«Let us remember, then, that Cartier is known as the «jeweler of kings» for its precious jewelry sets. It dared to combine gold and steel to achieve new aesthetic results and volume effects. Part of the impressive 1988 Animalière collection, the Double Tiger Head bracelets in yellow gold with black lacquer and two pear-shaped emeralds for eyes and one onyx for the great feline's nose are among Cartier's significant creations of the era.

While some designers and houses create new pieces inspired by the decade's style, others offer historical pieces for sale. At Van Cleef & Arpels, this includes a romantic yellow gold necklace with ruby daisies and white diamonds, first presented in 1983. The necklace is now available through the house's Heritage collection.

The team behind Van Cleef & Arpels' Heritage collection, founded in 2007, seeks out, examines, analyzes, and then restores pieces from the company's past. Once their history is researched, these pieces are made available on the open market and exhibited at specialized shows, such as TEFAF Maastricht.

In London, seek out the established dealer Charlie Barron. «Heavy, chunky, but also bold yellow gold jewelry was the look of the 1980s,» he notes. Today, Barron's Bruton Street showroom features a yellow gold Tubas necklace worthy of Cameron Cook, set with a 18.34-carat round diamond.

Rihanna has been the centerpiece of the Met Gala for years, showcasing artistic red carpet looks. As she arrives fashionably late, this year was no different.

With the theme «Fashion is Art,» she wore a Maison Margiela dress by Glenn Martens. Inspired by medieval architecture and paintings by the Flemish Primitives in Flanders, in northern Belgium.

Her dress was made with recycled computer cables as threads. But the bodice of the bust used more than 115,000 crystal beads, antique jewelry, and chains.

A few weeks ago, Brittany Siminitz says she added a few things to her cart at an online fashion retailer. I was quite disappointed that I had to cancel the order. As it turned out, however, I didn't have to worry about finding another necklace like it. There are plenty of necklaces with oversized beads — and even better ones.

A beautiful piece of fashion might be more within this woman's budget. But the world of high-end and mid-range jewelry is also rich with options. As for this blossoming style, our industry offers a plethora of choices.

Designers quickly responded to the renewed demand for maximalism, with oversized beads shaping up to be one of the season's most significant jewelry trends. These pieces don't just accessorize an outfit—they anchor it, serving as a true focal point rather than a secondary element.

As every year, I am looking for global distinctions in Greek jewelry that will grace the cover of Just Gold. So this year, starting my search, I came across the Eros Psyche distinction at last year's JCK Awards.

I attended the Design Section of the Athens Jewelry International Show from the very first year it was established. So I was familiar with Eros Psyche from their annual participation. Thus, I took the courage to contact them and ask if we could feature the award-winning ring on our cover. And also, to meet them in person.

And so, I found myself at the Eros Psyche studio, in the heart of Athens. So that I could meet the artists behind the jewelry. There, Maria Apostolopoulou welcomed me.

Our meeting was destined to be a lengthy and substantive conversation about art and creation. But also about the meaning of persevering in something you love, even if it seems “forgotten” in the modern world. Through her words and passion, I felt admiration and, at the same time, unexpected hope.

In a difficult time, when many give up, I saw a man fighting to keep alive a centuries-old art. And he does it with humility, light, and a willingness to share it. Something you rarely encounter.

The art of seal engraving

Maria doesn't just create jewelry; she resurrects an ancient Greek art form, glyptography (or gem carving). This means carving figures and symbols into precious stones, entirely by hand.

This art has always been connected to the sacred and the personal. With origins that reach back to ancient Greek philosophers, poets, and kings. Each stone became a bearer of meaning and spirit, constituting the personal identity of each individual.

Maria Apostolopoulou came into contact with this art in the 1990s, while she was involved in set and costume design. When she heard about Nick Kielty-Labrinides, she decided to apprentice with him. He was the last European master of the seal engraving school, and he had settled in Greece to teach. For six whole years, she dedicated herself to the precision, patience, and spirituality of the process, drawing as much as she could from this unique individual.

Since then, Maria has become one of the few engravers in the world who continue this art. Not through mass production, but as it was done thousands of years ago, by hand. With breath, concentration and a deep knowledge of stone, which does not forgive mistakes.

Together with Nikos Karakostas, known for his futuristic and sculptural designs, they combine glyptography with modern aesthetics. Creating unique handmade jewelry that resembles small works of art. It is impressive how an ancient technique meets contemporary design. Proving that the past and the future can coexist harmoniously on a single object.

The philosophy behind the name “Eros Psyche”

At some point during our conversation, after she had shown me various subjects she chooses, I asked her what her favorite creative theme is. She answered without hesitation and with a smile: «Love, of course, because it is the driving force of the Soul.»

And so the studio's name was born: Eros Psyche. A title that perfectly expresses their philosophy, the meeting of creative energy with the inner essence of art.

Every work born in this studio is the result of this encounter. Love activates the Soul, and thus matter is transformed into something superior, into symbol, art, message.

Recognitions and international collaborations

Maria and Nikos's work has received numerous awards in recent years, both in Greece and abroad. Both creators have been repeatedly honored for their design and their contribution to contemporary artistic jewelry making.

The studio's collaboration with the Houston Museum of Natural Science is a great moment. The museum hosts her jewelry in its official jewelry shop, approaching goldsmithing as art rather than a product. At the same time, her relationship with the British Museum is ongoing and creative. The museum commissions special pieces from her connected to temporary exhibitions. Inviting her to draw inspiration from historical and artistic themes to create new works.

The Eros Psyche project has also been presented at the Museum of Cycladic Art and the Ilias Lalaounis Jewelry Museum. Maria is also an officially recommended artist of the Homo Faber Guide, the international platform of the Michelangelo Foundation, which showcases the world's leading artisans, creators, and craft workshops.

Her presence there is not merely honorary. It is confirmation of its authenticity as well as its cultural footprint. Eros Psyche is counted among the few active sculptural ateliers worldwide that continue to work in the manner of the ancient masters.

The dream

Among the many topics we opened that day, we also spoke about the biggest problem in Greek jewelry making. The lack of a unified school that would bring together all the specialties of the sector, designers, artisans, as well as engravers. A school that would give jewelry making the position it deserves as a national art. Not only on a local level, but also internationally, promoting Greece as the cradle of creation.

Maria spoke to me with a vision and a deep desire for her dream of establishing a Public School of Jewelry Making. Open to young artists who want to learn, evolve, and continue this craft. Her dream is to see Greek jewelry regain the prestige it deserves as art, culture, and identity.

Maria Apostolopoulou doesn't keep art to herself. She is willing to share it, teach it, and continue it. Through her work and words, she conveys the belief that Greek jewelry can regain its former splendor. It can once again become a point of reference for our culture and soul.

Leaving the studio that day, I felt as though I had met a bright person, with an aura of serenity, kindness, and creative power, who had given me hope. The conviction that, as long as there are people like her, art will continue to be born, to inspire, and to travel beyond the borders of place and time.
