eBay extends its authenticity service to high-end jewellery. To this end, it will work with the Gemological Institute of America.
The authenticity service was introduced in 2020, expanding to watches, sports shoes, bags and transaction cards.
Now, eBay will certify new and used jewelry that has a selling price of $500 or more. It will include branded jewelry from Bulgari, Van Cleef & Arpels, David Yurman, Cartier and Tiffany & Co.
GIA experts and gemologists will certify the jewellery. They will evaluate them in terms of metal type, purity and gemstone quality.
Jewellery has always been a popular category in the market and its growth shows that consumer demand is constantly increasing. This is according to Tirath Kamdar, general manager of luxury goods at eBay.
eBay's jewellery category has seen a significant upward trend over the past year, the company said.
Sales of Bulgari, David Yurman and Van Cleef & Arpels saw double-digit growth compared to the previous month. Jewellery purchases from brands such as Chopard, Harry Winston and Hermès also saw a year-on-year increase of 38% in the last six months.
In 2021, every minute there were eight jewellery purchases on eBay, for a total of 4.2 million fine jewellery items sold. So there are 7.8 million fine jewelry listings, on average, on eBay every day.
In fact, the herringbone style is doing particularly well, eBay said. We see bracelet sales trending up by 48% year-on-year and necklace sales up by 26%.
We continue to listen to our community of luxury fans. So our goal is to foster an even more trustworthy shopping and sales environment. So extending our “Authenticity Guarantee” to jewellery was a critical next step for our luxury business, said Kamdar.
