For her annual Halloween report, National Jeweler assistant editor Lenore Fedow combines fine jewelry with classic and contemporary Halloween costumes.
In honor of Halloween, Associate Editor Lenore Fedow paired the fine jewelry with various Halloween costumes, including a witch and a ballerina.
One of my favorite things about being the editor of National Jeweler is how often I get to play dress-up, trying on all kinds of beautiful jewelry. There's no better time to play dress up than Halloween.
With the spooky season just around the corner, I thought I'd combine two of my great loves - jewelry and Halloween - for my annual Halloween story.
For past Halloween, I have explored cursed gems, cursed jewelry and creepy jewelry alike.
This year, I'll be combining classic as well as contemporary costumes with my scariest and sparkliest jewelry choices.
I tend to get my Halloween accessories from Spirit Halloween, but here's what I would do with an endless budget.
Witch
I've dressed up as a witch for Halloween several times. You put on a witch hat and a black dress and you're ready to go. It's a fun, yet easy outfit that lends itself to lots of great jewelry.
I admire witches, both in pop culture and in real life, as symbols of female empowerment, drawing their magic and power from within.
Bold jewellery would suit a witch very well. I'd also add some snakes and cobwebs.
What is a witch without one of her familiars? These 14-karat yellow gold snake earrings by Marrow Fine with black diamonds and freshwater pearls ($3,000) would be a fitting tribute to a serpentine companion. This 14-karat yellow gold ring with a spider web and two diamonds in a frame ($605) from Jennie Kwon Designs is mesmerizing. This 18-karat yellow gold «Spells» ring from Sauer may be a little over the top, but it works! It's set with sapphires, rubies and diamonds ($2,436).Now this is a talisman! This 14-karat yellow gold and amethyst necklace by Yael Designs has a diamond snake wrapped around the gemstone ($3,386).This 18-karat rose gold bracelet with onyx, diamonds and coral ($38,100) by Picchiotti radiates a very magical vibe.
Ballerina
I spent so much of my childhood in a dance studio that I never bothered to choose this costume growing up.
As an adult, I would happily wear a skirt and choose some elegant jewelry. Pearls paired with elegant silhouettes would perfectly complement a cute ballerina.
This 18-karat gold and diamond «Shiraz» choker ($8,900) from Ashaha is the finishing touch. You can't go wrong with pearl studs, especially these 18-karat yellow gold «Floret» earrings with pearls and diamonds by Verragio. And a double pearl ring to match, like this one from Verragio. It's the 18-karat yellow gold «Petal» toi et moi ring ($2,650) with pearls and diamonds from the «Reverie» collection. This Buccellati «Macri» bracelet has the elegance befitting a ballerina.
Mermaid
The «mermaidcore» trend has come and gone, but we could bring it back for one night.
I'm thinking pearls, of course, and marine jewelry, with aquamarine at the top of the list.
I think a mermaid would love aquamarine jewelry, like this Ray Griffiths aquamarine stretch bracelet with 18-karat yellow gold beads ($1,090).These 18-karat rose gold Assael earrings that resemble jellyfish would impress any mermaid. The Willow Creek jasper earrings feature champagne-toned pink diamonds and natural pearl fringe (price available upon request).Pearls and mermaids have meaning. I would happily wear this 18-karat rose gold Picchiotti ring ($24,300) with a 16mm Tahitian pearl and round diamonds. This 18-karat yellow gold «Fringe» seahorse necklace ($1,600) from Renna Jewels. It's perfect for the mermaid who wants to take her friends with her.Let's double up on the Renna Jewels pieces with this medium «Aegean» cuff ($18,000), with mermaid scales.
Wednesday Addams
There is no version of the Adams Family that I don't love. Whether it's the 1960s series, the 1990s movie series, or the new animated versions.
I have yet to see «Wednesday» on Netflix. But it's on my list, as Wednesday Addams has always been my favorite character on the show. She's smart, witty and gruesome. What's not to love?;
For Wednesday, I have an emo Hot Topic vibe, but more upbeat. Jewelry with black diamonds or skull motifs would be a great fit.
I would avoid earrings because they could get caught in her distinctive pigtails.
This black diamond «Thorn» tennis bracelet ($13,500) in 14-karat yellow gold by Marrow Fine combines intimidating and glamorous. This Buddha Mama skull ring is pretty scary for Wednesday. The 20 karat yellow gold ring is decorated with black and white enamel. But also decorated with diamonds (price available upon request). This «Wisp» necklace ($898) by Jennie Kwon Designs, with an oval black diamond, is very Wednesday.Let's add an eternity band. With Jade Trau's black pavé diamonds in 18-karat yellow gold ($2,700) for a little sparkle.
Lydia Deetz
You can't talk about the great emo girls in film history without mentioning Lydia Deetz from Beetlejuice. A Halloween classic that was recently revisited with the release of «Beetlejuice Beetlejuice».
My favorite outfit from the original film is Lydia Deetz's unforgettable red wedding dress. So that would be my costume, with the big hair and red veil.
As for jewellery, Fabergé has me covered with their new Beetlejuice Beetlejuice collection. Its spooky elegance is perfect for a Halloween bride.
This ruby Headworm collar bar by Fabergé would look right at home pinned to the front of Lydia's dress.Let's start with the 18-carat white gold Sandworm spiral wrap ring. With red enamel and ruby ($20,248) from the new Fabergé x Beetlejuice Beetlejuice collection. These red enamel Fabergé spiral earrings with rubies and diamonds ($14,293) would also go perfectly with the dress. We don't want to be too fitting. So let's also add this Fabergé spiral pendant with black enamel, emerald and diamonds ($15,881).
Cleopatra
As a history buff with a love for snake jewelry, I don't know why I hadn't considered becoming a Cleopatra before.
If I were to be the Queen of the Nile for one night, I would wear a lot of gold jewelry. Especially pieces inspired by snakes and scarabs.
These large «Cleopatra» earrings ($219) by Simone I. Smith, made of 18-karat yellow gold on sterling silver, speak for themselves. This snake ring from Lord Jewelry is fit for a queen, for sure. It's made of 18-karat yellow gold. It's even set with diamonds and rubies for eyes and features gorgeous enamel work (price available upon request). This scarab pendant by Harwell Godfrey is the perfect choice for Cleopatra. The 18-karat yellow gold pendant is adorned with smoky topaz, moonstone and champagne diamonds ($11,995).A Menē 24-carat yellow gold «Double Leaf» cuff ($13,212). It's inspired by the Etruscan design, but I'd say it fits Cleopatra perfectly.
